The book is with its first readers

For a few weeks now the manuscript has not been mine alone.

A small handful of readers have it — people I trust to be honest, which is the only kind worth having at this stage. I sent it the way you hand someone a photograph you are not sure has come out: quietly, and then trying not to watch their face.

What I asked for was not praise. I would distrust praise if I got it. I asked whether the thing holds — whether Lena's grief reads as grief and not as a device, whether the going-back works on the page the way it works in my head, whether the quiet is doing its job or merely being quiet.

So far the answers are the ones you hope for. The ache is landing where it should. And the places that do not yet work turn out to be the exact places I had already been avoiding — which is the real gift of an early reader. They do not tell you the book is finished. They tell you, precisely, where it is not, and they are right.

There is more to come. A couple of reads are still open, and at the end of the month I will make a quiet decision about the road to publication: whether August holds, or whether the book asks for a little more time. Either way it will be the better for the asking.
